In his early research, Frederick Hare focused on
high-latitude climatology and biogeography, behaviour of stratosphere and North
America’s water and energy balances. From 1969, his interests were on atmospheric
carbon dioxide, climate change, drought and arid zone climates. Hare has been
active in environment conservation movements, served on commissions and
committees related to acid rain, desertification, heavy metals, nuclear
reactors, waste products, atmospheric ozone, greenhouse gases and climate
change (3). Hare has conducted studies on nuclear waste management in Sweden
and France.
He is a frequent public speaker and author on the climate change issue. He believes that Canada’s most urgent environmental challenge this century is climate change by fossil fuel’s emissions, and that nuclear power is a more environmentally-friendly alternative to fossil fuels (2). Hare argues that despite the radioactive waste produced, there is technology that exists to overcome transportation and storage problems.
Hare has written nearly 200 books, reports, articles and commentaries, including The Restless Atmosphere (1953) and Climate Canada (1974 and 1979), co-authoring with Morley K. Thomas (3).
